8 Healthy Greek Yogurt Mix-ins

So my kids love flavored yogurts, as expected because they are basically dessert. Have you ever read the sugar content on some of these. Even the healthiest brands are packed with sugar. But they love them, so I buy a kids brand with 8g of sugar apposed to the 15g I discovered in my 16 year olds raspberry greek yogurt. I also try to continuously reintroduce plain yogurt to them.

I grew up eating plain yogurt with a little bit of maple syrup and loved it. I try this with my kids and sometimes they go for it and sometimes they complain that they want the other. But it’s not just kids, everyone is eating these flavored yogurts thinking it’s great for them and they never eat it plain.

Yogurt is promoted as a health food and it should be for so many reasons. However most people aren’t eating plain yogurt. The yogurt most people are grabbing is usually flavored and loaded with sugar. I’m all for fruit in my yogurt but fresh fruit that I add myself. So here’s a few mix-ins that give you that delicious yogurt flavor with out packing on the sugar.

#1 My Absolute Favorite way to eat yogurt is what I call my Post Workout Protein Pudding:

  • 1 small container of Plain Greek yogurt (2 if I need the added protein to rebuild)
  • 1 scoop of my chocolate protein powder (I use garden of life)
  • Splash of Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk just to give it a more creamy texture.

#2 Get Ready for Dessert with some Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough:

(I found an old picture of the first time I tried this. It’s actually the first recipe I ever tried using yogurt aside from just eating it with fruit or maple syrup)

  • 1 small container of Plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp of peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp of honey
  • 1 tsp of vanilla
  • small pinch of sea salt
  • 1 tbsp of dark chocolate chips

#3 Chocolate Pudding:

  • 1 small container of Plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp of raw organic cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp of honey or your favorite sweetener
  • 1 tbsp of dark chocolate chips

#4 Apple Pie:

  • 1 small container of Plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 small diced apple
  • 1 tbsp of nut butter (I prefer almond)
  • a dash of cinnamon or apple pie seasoning

#5 Honey Yogurt:

  • 1 small container of Plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp of honey drizzled on the yogurt or use maple syrup for a sweeter flavor

#6 Berry Yogurt:

  • 1 small container of Plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp of your favorite berries (strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, or raspberries)
  • I like it with just the berries but if you’d like added sweetness add 1 tsp of honey

#7 Peanut Butter Banana Protein:

  • 1 small container of Plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp of protein peanut butter powder
  • chop half a banana

#8 Pomegranate Yogurt:

  • 1 small container of Plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp pomegranates
  • If you’d like added sweetness add 1 tsp of honey

Those are just a few mix-ins if you want to get your yogurt fix. There are so many recipes that you can make using yogurt as a substitute, like salad dressings, sour cream, baking. I made an amazing sauce once with roasted pablano peppers, yogurt, cilantro and lime.

I hope you enjoy the recipes and tell me what you think.
